Happy Water Day

Cool Clear Water

Many a time i walked

A well beaten track

In my search for water

Cool clear water

It was hot and dry

The sun hung high

When i searched for water

Cool clear waterMischief',

the blue healer and iSearched low and highSo we could taste the water

Cool clear water

The creek we found

Low in the ground

We bathed ourselves with waterLife giving water

Cool clear water

Life began and did arise

From the embrace of water

Cool clear water

Sustainable Living

Too much emphasis on green living and environment friendliness through Internet & media has created enough awareness among masses all over the world, that administrations are taking environment friendly decisions and we also see legislation being formed on national and international levels to protect environment.
But in this all going green phobia, a lot of confusion and misunderstanding is also developing, many of us now correlate use of green electricity to sustainability, in fact using energy efficiently is sustainability. Most of us think that using canvas bags instead of plastic is an eco friendly gesture, but caring a cloth bag every time we got to shop is being green.
It’s great that world wide huge cooperates are investing in renewable sources of energy, and production of eco friendly products. But sustainability can only be achieved if humans reduce there consumption level, and a line between needs and luxury will be drawn, when need for waste dumps and land fills wont be an issue. Sustainability is harvesting some amount of our food from our backyards, gardens and balconies, which was not irrigated with community water supply but the rain water we harvested. Sustainability is leaving our car at home and walking to the market, making sure suburbs are not turning into city centers and marine life is not contaminated just for a little luxury of no significance.
Giant steps taken by governments and Ngo’s can’t make much of a difference unless Little green steps are taken on individual level.

Salads that Help You Live Longer

1. Classic Beet Salad
Steam beets and slice into a salad of mixed greens, sliced avocado, and a handful of pine nuts and walnuts. If you want to bulk up the salad, add crumbled soft tofu or shredded chicken.

What is this salad doing for you?
This is an all-in-one anti-aging salad. Beets contain powerful nutrients that help protect against heart disease, birth defects and cancer, especially colon cancer. The avocado and pine nuts are healthy fats and walnuts have omega-3 fatty acids, which bring heart health benefits.

2. Cooling Cucumber Salad
Thinly slice cucumbers, removing the peel if you prefer, and toss with red onions. Let this sit for 30 minutes, then top with apple cider vinegar mixed with Dijon mustard.

What is this salad doing for you?
Cucumbers are a cooling food and also a natural diuretic, helping to hydrate you and lower the pressure in your arteries. The vinegar has antiseptic and antibiotic properties and may also help to reverse hardening of the arteries, as well as dissolve gall stones and kidney stones.

3. Tomato Basil Salad
Cook whole cherry or grape tomatoes in olive oil over medium-high heat until they are lightly browned. Cool, and then toss with fresh basil. For dressing, combine olive oil, vinegar, and a pinch of fresh oregano.

What is this salad doing for you?
Cooking partially breaks down your food, making the nutrients accessible to your body's systems; for example, lycopene, an essential carotenoid antioxidant that has been found to reduce the risks of heart disease, macular degeneration, as well as prostate and other cancers, is more available in cooked tomatoes than uncooked. Basil is filled with luteolin, a bioflavonoid that studies have shown to be the best protection of cell DNA from radiation.

4. Fennel and Dried Plum Salad
Combine sliced fennel, sautéed or raw, and dried plums on a plate. Drizzle with a ginger vinaigrette. (Olive oil, vinegar and minced ginger, if you are making yourself.)

What is this salad doing for you?
This salad soothes digestion and supports weight loss. Fennel helps digestion in two ways: It stimulates the production of gastric juices and also calms the nervous system, regulating the action of the muscles that line the intestine. Packed with vitamin C and essential minerals like potassium and magnesium, dried plums contain a perfectly balanced proportion of soluble and insoluble fibers, ensuring bowel regularity and preventing insulin resistance—making them a great ingredient for weight management.

If weight loss is one of your goals, you may benefit from the herbal formulation B-Slim, a nutrient-rich dietary supplement designed to be part of a sensible overall weight management program.

5. Asian Carrot Salad
Combine shredded carrots, green onion, and sprouts (alfalfa, red clover, daikon radish, and bean sprouts will all work). Dress with sesame oil and rice vinegar. Then sprinkle sesame seeds over the top. For extra kick, add a small amount of grated ginger or chili pepper.

What is this salad doing for you?
Carrots are antioxidant-rich foods filled with beta-carotene, beneficial to eye health. Sprouts are packed with many nutrients with a bounty of health benefits. And sesame oil, the oil most commonly consumed oil by Chinese centenarians, is rich in phytic acid, the antioxidant that may prevent cancer. Studies have also indicated that one variety of sesame oil, called lignan sesamin, radically reduced cholesterol levels in the bloodstream and liver of rats.

6. Watercress with Tofu Dressing
To make the tofu dressing, combine 1/2 pound of plain tofu with a 1/4 cup of olive oil, 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, 1 teaspoon of honey, 1 teaspoon of rice or apple vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon of tamari soy sauce (or a pinch of salt), and 1 tablespoon of tahini. Simply blend until creamy and drizzle over a bed of salad greens.

What is this salad doing for you?
Watercress contains a rich supply of vitamins A and E as well as the minerals calcium, magnesium, potassium, manganese, phosphorous, iodine, and zinc. It is also a natural diuretic that cools you down, and helps alleviate excess water retention and the bloated sensation that comes with it.

I hope you enjoy these six summer salads! I invite you to visit often and share your own personal health and longevity tips with me.

May you live long, live strong, and live happy!

Black Baloons Energy

sustainable library in Kazakhstan

Sustainable library uses computer modeling techniques to lower energy requirement.

BIG Architects have unveiled plans of an incredible library that is to be developed in Kazakhstan. Dubbed, Nursultan Nazarbayev, the library design will be comprised of four parts – a circle, a rotunda, the arch and the yurt. The structure will offset or maximize solar glare depending on the climate and the need.

The designers minimized the cooling load on the design using some advanced computer modeling to calculate thermal exposure on the building envelope. The overall design of the library makes some parts receive more light than others, which needed the designers to create a geometric pattern of the entire structure to regulate solar gain.

A solar-powered shelter for campers

Self-sufficient outdoor habitat for camping industry.

Mostly all campsites are far from cities and require fuel-eating generators to bring illumination after dark. Industrial designer Benjamin Charles is out there to help the camping and the hotel industry with semi-nomad structures that are almost self-sufficient

Coupled with solar thermal panel to provide hot water for kitchen and bathroom the shelters ensure that your camping vacation isn’t a threat to the ecosystem. To give more autonomy to the campers, the shelters are equipped with dry toilets, which save a lot of precious water.

SOUL OF INNATE EXISTENCE

Foot steps like gentle coils,

Traces of rabbit toe,

Adobes of cane heaps,

Grounds of scattered wild,

Nectar from haven hue,

Such should be our existence,

Thirsty for innate exaltation.

SOLAR ENERGY

Solar energy today means clean and green mean of energy, but solar energy is being harnessed by humans both intentionally and UN intentionally since the very solar day they came into existence. Simply sitting in sun means absorbing solar energy to aid our bodies with vitamin D, preserving food with the drying process using solar energy is another primitive but very effective mean of harvesting the solar energy.
Solar energy moved along with the development of human societies, Babylonians, Arab, Moorish, Mughal’s, and almost all Indian civilizations used solar energy as a natural lighting system, using reflective mirrors embedded into beautiful patterns in there buildings, along with the water and mercury pounds to reflect sunlight into desired directions. Solar energy took an absolute new meaning with the development of photovoltaic solar cells and very quickly became a popular idea of an alternative source of energy that could counter fossil fuel. But it was not until the last decade of the 20th century when solar energy became the ultimate symbol of self sufficiency triggered by general séance of chaos because of the war on terror.
Means of solar energy are evolving on daily bases, energy efficient and low cost means of solar energy are being explored to make solar energy a more viable source of power generation. Solar reflectors are being used to concentrate solar energy on one focal point in order to harvest the heat of the sun that is then used for running sterling engines and other types of turbines. Micro solar panels are being made for cost and energy efficient utilization of solar energy. Solar paints and ivy’s along with charges that use solar energy to power out gadgets and cell phones are becoming popular very quickly. Solar energy is free and you don’t need to kill innocent people to secure it for one nation only, every one in the world gets there fair and consistent share of solar energy every morning. It wont be wrong to state that solar energy will fuel our future beyond the boundaries of fossil fuel saga.

Maglev wind turbine.

A Maglev wind turbine or Maglev windmill would use magnetic levitation to replace conventional bearings in the design of a wind turbine. A recent design of Maglev wind turbine was developed in China by Guangzhou Energy Research Institute. This design of Maglev wind turbine claims to utilize winds with starting speeds as low as 1.5 meters per second (m/s), and cut-in speeds of 3 m/s. Such Maglev wind turbine should be able to add 1,000 hours of operation annually to wind power plants in areas with an average wind speed of 3 m/s.[1] However, since the energy available in wind varies so the power produced by Maglev wind turbine at such velocities would be lower than conventional wind turbines under higher speed winds.
The rotating turbine shaft in Maglev wind turbine is supported by magnetic levitation instead of ball bearings. Magnetic bearings have been used for smaller turbines and pumps, but they generally can't handle impacts disturbing the shaft, and generally require actively controlled electromagnets. Making magnetic bearings strong enough to handle the loads of a Maglev wind turbine would use prohibitive amounts of power just keeping the electromagnets running. The Chinese design of Maglev wind turbine is said to use permanent magnets to support the rotor shaft.
Little detailed technical information supporting these claims about Maglev wind turbine is available in English.
Chinese company Zhongke Hengyuan Energy Technology invested CN¥400 million in building the base for the maglev wind turbine generators, in which construction began in November 2007. Maglev Wind Turbine Technologies Inc. announced the launch of a wind turbine power generating device based on magnetic levitation called the Maglev Wind Turbine on July 26, 2007.

Mysterious Maglev wind turbine

Maglev wind turbine has been a big splash on Worldwatch's blog, Treehugger and inhabitat. The original article about Maglev wind turbine
was in Chinese Xinhua News paper, and as per this article about Maglev wind turbine some of the claims from the English and web media are misleading.

First of all Maglev wind turbine won't be levitating off the ground, and won't be frictionless as well, but these may be significantly more efficient than existing windmills. The magnetic levitation that Maglev wind turbine would use is between the rotating shaft and the fixed base of the machine, basically taking the place of ball bearings. Such magnetic bearings have been used for decades in smaller turbines and pumps by Ebara, Leybold, Seiko-Seiki, and others. However, they generally can't handle being bumped around much because the magnetic force isn't that strong enough. Making magnetic bearings strong enough to handle the loads put on them by Maglev wind turbine would be hard, and would use prohibitive amounts of power just keeping the electromagnets running strongly enough. However, the Worldwatch article says the new Chinese device uses "full-permanent" magnets, meaning there are no electromagnets, only cleverly placed permanent ones, so it should use no power. It sounds like they will be used on small turbines (perfect for home use), which would be similar in scale to the pumps and industrial turbines currently using magnetic bearings. But who knows, in a few years it might be possible to scale them up for Maglev wind turbine.
Unfortunately there's not a shred of additional technical information in the article about Maglev wind turbine’s structure. so we can only speculate what their solution was for the mysterious Maglev wind turbine. Some are speculating that they're probably using Halbach arrays in a system like the Inductrack invented at Lawrence Livermore Labs several years ago. Any permanent magnet system would doubtless need lots of Neodymium ("rare earth") magnets, which may have questionable sustainability when mined in large amounts, but as it happens China is rich in that element--in fact, energy.buzz points out that China owns 90% of the world's market of rare earth magnets. Since July 2006 Maglev wind turbine remains a mystery with very little details and even lesser news.

Sustainable Living

Sustainable living refers to a lifestyle that attempts to reduce an individual's or society's use of the Earth's natural resources. Sustainable living is an attempt to reduce carbon footprints by altering methods of transportation, energy consumption and diet form furious consumptions to sensible choices. Sustainable and ecological living promotes living in manners that are consistent with sustainability, in natural balance and respect of humanity’s symbiotic relationship with the Earth's natural ecology and cycles. The practice and general philosophy of Sustainable living is highly interrelated with the overall principles of sustainable development. Sustainable living is all about minimizing our "ecological footprints to an extent that it dose not create an environmental impact. Proponents of Sustainable living hope to preserve the Earth for future generations of human beings and other life.
Sustainable living branches from the concepts of sustainability and self-sufficiency. Sustainability, in recent years, has been expressed as "development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Self-sufficiency is the core principle of Sustainable living in which individuals or societies consume only that which they have produced. It is generally a stricter ideology and practicing sustainable living in an urban world is becoming a global cause.
Sustainable living demands sustainable urban infrastructure is a form of sustainable design, which adheres to the principles of sustainable living. Its main principles are to achieve technological and governmental policies that enable urban planning for sustainable architecture and agriculture.
Sustainable living according to Lester R. Brown, a prominent environmentalist and founder of the World watch Institute and Earth Policy Institute, is “Sustainable living in the 21st century is "shifting to a renewable energy-based, reuse/recycle economy with a diversified transport system."
There a many movements that may appear similar to sustainable living, which oppose further mechanization of society vis-à-vis technological achievements. Sustainable living, however, adheres to the belief that technological progress can be effectively achieved through appropriate technology.

Aeroturbine by Aerotecture

Aeroturbine was developed by Chicago-based Aerotecture International in 2007 and is a remarkable design in the field of renewable energy. Aeroturbine is known for its innovative design that is perfect for urban wind power generation. The turbines of Aeroturbine are designed for rooftop installation on either commercial or multi-family residences that have access to strong winds. Aerotecture started selling the commercial prototypes of Aeroturbine in late 2007.
Aeroturbine’s design has the interesting aspect of both a vertical prototype for multi-directional wind locations, and a horizontal version for locations with a steady primary wind direction. Aeroturbine has been designed to operate at slow speeds, with little noise and maintenance. The reflective finish and slow turning speed of Aeroturbine reduced the risk to birds and wildlife. A 510V Aeroturbine produces an estimated 1kW of power in 30 mph winds with the 520H produces an estimated 1.8kW from similar wind speeds. Each Aeroturbine is custom fitted to the architecture of the building with a ballpark cost for the 510V of $15,000 and the 520H of $21,000. As Aeroturbine is easy to move and install it can be easily considered as the next generation of wind energy, for our ever urbanizing world.
Potential installation locations for Aeroturbine needs to be 40 feet above ground, unobstructed by trees or other structures, with wind speeds averaging over 10mph. Many are arguing that the asking price is a too high for the Aeroturbine, but tend to forget that the payback time might be too long for Aeroturbine, but is still less then the cost we are and will be paying with our ever increasing carbon foot print.

Aeroturbine free energy or a cost disaster

Aeroturbine by Aerotecture are being called the future of urban wind energy. Despite of this positive reputation of Aeroturbine many are arguing that the asking price by Aerotecture is a too high. Assuming that one could get 5 KWH per day out of the 1KW 510V model of Aeroturbine and assuming that the value of the KWH is $0.12/KWH, yearly income equivalent would be;

365days/yr x 5KWH/day x $0.12/KWH = $219/year
Therefore payback time in years would be
$15,000/($219/yr) = 68.5 years

Even if you could get 10 kWH per day (which is doubtful because where are you going to have wind blowing at 30mph 10 hours/day), the payback for Aeroturbine would still be about 35 years. However, Bill Becker’s Aeroturbine its self would probably breakdown long before that.

Being a strong supporter of green energy, the cost of Aeroturbine does not disturb me, but Aerotecture should consider a more sensible pricing for Aeroturbine as green technology should be consumer friendly and so that its implementation can be wide spread. Aeroturbine its self is not an expansive set of equipment, in fact it’s simple and cheaper in terms of manicuring compared to the regular wind turbines. Aeroturbine is a light weight easy to install low thought regular yield equipment that should be sold in bulks on more retail grounds.

Empire Estate Building Going Green

Empire State Building, once the world’s tallest building, is now set for a $100 million ‘green renovation.’ Empire State Building the iconic symbol of NY, just underwent an eight month modeling and analysis program and will receive a massive Green overhaul.
The 102-story Empire State building was built during the Great Depression; now, during the current economic ’stumbles,’ Empire State building is poised to lead the way into a more efficient future. “We have a very deep commitment to sustainability,” Tony Malkin of the Empire State Building Company says. “Without applying sustainable practices in all aspects of our businesses and lives, we will greatly harm our future.”

Empire State building management has also decided not to apply for LEED certification, opting instead to making the building as efficient and healthy as possible without such guidelines. The partners involved in Empire State building goin green project are fully aware that this project will be serving as a template for the massive efficiency upgrades in store for many of the nation’s buildings in the not so distant future. Seventy-five percent of the 4.5 million buildings in the United States are more than 20 years old and need energy retrofits. While a 38% predicted reduction in energy use is an incredibly ambitious undertaking. Empire State Building’s renovation agenda include a total overhaul of the HVAC system, improvements to the Empire State building's envelope, triple-glazed windows, electronic readouts to make users aware of their personal energy consumption, maximized day lighting, tenant demand ventilation control, and occupant sensor controls.
This retrofit of Empire State building is just what New York needed. It does the job and does it well. If the parties involved in Empire State building goin green project are able to achieve the savings they anticipate, there will be no excuse not to look to the Empire State Building as the symbol of progress and American ingenuity that it was when it was built.

Natural Resources of renewable energy

The majority of renewable energy technologies are powered by the sun. Earth’s atmosphere system is in equilibrium such that heat radiation into space is equal to incoming solar radiation, the resulting level of energy within the Earth-Atmosphere system can roughly be described as the Earth's "climate. Energy is dissipated around the globe in the form of winds and ocean currents. Wave motion may play a role in the process of transferring mechanical energy between the atmosphere and the ocean through wind stress. Solar energy is also responsible for this distribution.
Renewable energy flows involve natural phenomena such as sunlight, wind, tides, geothermal heat all of these are producers of renewable energy.
"Renewable energy is derived from natural processes that are replenished constantly. Renewable energy in its various forms is derived directly from the sun, or from heat generated deep within the earth. Thus renewable energy is generated from solar, wind, ocean, hydro power, biomass, geothermal resources, and biofuels along hydrogen derived from renewable resources.

Sustainable Design Tennis Ball chair

In a sustainable design article posted by Yuka Yoneda on inhabitat . Yuka tells us how to be sustainable enough to fight the ever increasing global warming by using recycled material.
What do you think of when you think “green design?” Probably not a chair made entirely of recycled tennis balls! This sustainable and unexpected take on recycling by furniture designer Hugh Hayden maker of this playful FUNATURE Tennis Ball Chair and also the winner of BKLYN Designs Most Innovative Use of Materials Award. He used medium size (297 repurposed tennis balls) to make it smart and simple, it’s also fun and sustainable and when it comes to getting people talking about sustainable design, the Tennis Ball Chair is the perfect eco conversation piece.

Why tennis balls? Their high turnover during matches means that a huge number of the fuzzy lime green spheres get discarded despite their being practically new. Recognizing the durability of the tennis balls, as well as the need to salvage them from getting burnt or dumped, Hayden decided to use them to craft a tongue-in-cheek chair that is surprisingly comfortable to sit .

Since the main component of the chairs already exists and does not need to be produced or processed, it is even more sustainable than some of the materials we usually consider to be extremely sustainable. And in terms of being delightful to look at, the Tennis Ball Chair takes the cake. From this sustainable art piece we can smell that Hugh and the Wimbledon have collaborations? It would certainly a sustainable match (point) scored by them

Water Renewable Energy

Renewable Energy in water can be harnessed and used as water is about 800 times denser than air. Even a slow flowing stream of water, or moderate sea swell, can yield considerable amounts of renewable energy.
There are many forms of water renewable energy:
• Hydroelectric renewable energy is a term usually reserved for large-scale hydroelectric dams. Examples are the Grand Coulee Dam in Washington State and the Akosombo Dam in Ghana.
• Micro hydro renewable energy systems are hydroelectric power installations that typically produce up to 100 kW of power.
• Dam less hydro systems derive kinetic renewable energy from rivers and oceans without using a dam.
• Ocean renewable energy describes all the technologies to harness energy from the ocean and the sea.
o Renewable energy in marine current power, uses the kinetic renewable energy of marine currents.
o Tidal power captures renewable energy from the tides. Two different principles for generating renewable energy from the tides are used at the moment:
Tidal motion in the vertical direction: Tides come in, raise water levels in a basin, and tides roll out. Around low tide, the water in the basin is discharged through a turbine, exploiting the stored potential renewable energy.
Tidal motion in the horizontal direction: Uses tidal stream generators, like wind turbines but then in a tidal stream. Due to the high density of water, about eight-hundred times the density of air, tidal currents can have a lot of kinetic renewable energy.
o Renewable energy in wave power uses the energy in waves. Wave power machines usually take the form of floating or neutrally buoyant structures, which move relative to one another or to a fixed point. Renewable energy wave has now reached commercialization.
• Renewable energy in deep lake water cooling is an interesting phenomenon, although not technically an energy generation method, can save a lot of energy in summer. It uses submerged pipes as a heat sink for climate control systems. Lake-bottom water is a year-round local constant of about 4 °C.
Water has a lot of potential for producing green clean renewable energy, Dams and barrages all over the world are producing huge amount of Electricity and has hardly any carbon emissions.

Window Farming

am big fan of having own farms but was lacking space in my backyard but this remarkable experiment of sustainability by Britta Riley and Rebecca Bray came with the soluition, during in an article posted on inhabitat by Olivia Chen tells the mystery

Gardening enthusiasts living in cities will certainly cheer for Britta Riley and Rebecca Bray’s Window Farms experiment. The artist-in-residence duo at Eyebeam have teamed up to develop a DIY system for creating sustainable gardens that will enable anyone to start their own window farms right in their very own window. Britta and Rebecca were showcasing their prototype at Eyebeam last week and have enlisted a dozen or so volunteers that are building their own farms — all to go on display in windows throughout NYC from May 31 to July 14.
The window farms that we saw at Eyebeam was composed of several vertical columns with re-purposed water bottles that each held a potted plant. The set-up of these window farms also included a tub of water elevated above the vertical farm garden that allowed water to drip through the columns a catch basin was also placed at the bottom to catch the water that was not absorbed by the plants. Britta and Rebecca also told us that at home, they use a pump to cycle the water back through the system.

Sustainable Design

Have you ever thought about what happens to the thousands of plastic water bottles that are used during a marathon event? They’re mostly trashed if green-minded artists like Ashley Phillips aren’t around. The artist has shown his skills in designing a sustainable shelter known as the “Igloo” from the plastic waste collected after the London Marathon.

The Igloo bottle shelter was created to make use of plastic bottle waste that has started to blight the environment and also inspire others about circular metabolism. The igloo shelter has been created from over 4,000 plastic bottles that are held together by only one piece of wire and 40,000 rubber bands that are sourced from sustainable plantations. The plastic bottle shelter can easily be disassembled and can be mounted on a small trolley to ease its transportation.

Smart Meter Overview

Smart meter often refers to an electrical meter, but it can increasingly also mean a device measuring natural gas or water consumption. Term Smart meter, usually refers to an efficient meters. Smart Meters usually involve a different technology mix, such as real-time or near real-time sensors, power outage notification, and power quality monitoring. These additional features in Smart Meter are more than simple (AMR). Smart Meters are also believed to be a less costly alternative to traditional interval or time-of-use meters and are intended to be used on a wide scale with all customer classes, including residential customers. Smart meters may be part of a smart grid, but alone do not constitute a smart grid.

Smart Meter Purpose

Smart Meters can improve the inception of electricity deregulation. Government regulators have been looking for a means to match consumption with generation. Traditional electrical meters only measure total consumption. Smart Meters provide an economical way of measuring this information, Smart Meters allow price-setting agencies to introduce different prices for consumption based on the time of day and the season.

Smart Meter ECO Factor

Smart Meter is and Eco friendly product, simply because smart meter help us measure the consumption of energy and the loss of energy. Smart Meter not only measures the consumption of energy but also points at the loss of energy and helps us control theses losses.

Global Warming

Global warming means increase in the average temperature of Earth’s surface air and oceans. Global warming is basically increasing greenhouse gas concentrations resulting from human activity such as fossil fuel burning and deforestation. Due to Global Warming Global surface temperature increased 0.74 ± 0.18 °C (1.33 ± 0.32 °F) during the last century. According to IPCC natural phenomena such as solar variation and volcanoes produced most of the Global warming from pre-industrial times to 1950. Global warming increases with the increase in human’s carbon foot print. Global warming is a calculated and agreed upon phenomena and many are considering Global Warming as a bigger threat to man kind then a 3rd world war. Accusers accuse irresponsible human developmental and capitalism for Global warming. Honesty demands self accusation for Global warming as every action taken by man kind has a consequence and can contribute towards warming. ECO Watch dogs are blaming Global warming on major industrialized countries. Owing to Global warming an IPCC report indicate that global surface temperature will probably rise a further 1.1 to 6.4 °C (2.0 to 11.5 °F) during the twenty-first century. Increase in Global Warming will cause sea levels to rise and will change the amount and pattern of precipitation, probably including expansion of subtropical deserts, as Global warming is causing continuous retreat of glaciers, permafrost and sea ice is expected, with the Arctic region being particularly affected. Most studies about Global Warming focus on the period up to 2100. However, Global warming is expected to continue beyond 2100 even if emissions stop, because of the large heat capacity of the oceans and the long lifetime of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Global Warming’s other likely effects include shrinkage of the Amazon rainforest and Boreal forests. Global Warming is being blamed for sudden increases in the intensity of extreme weather events such as floods, tsunamis and acidic rains. Extinctions of many species and changes in agricultural yields are credited on Global Warming too. Global warming continues to be a hot Political and public agenda.

Toyota Prefab Homes

Toyota Prefab Homes sounds just rite simply because modern Japan is Prefab. Prefab Homes in Japan are being Manufactured and sold in mass by non-other then the automotive giant Toyota! In fact Toyota has been making & selling these Prefab Homes for the Past 20 years now. Well Toyota Prefab Homes sound just the thing for Japan not because Japan is a fast pace country but simply because Japan is an ever shacking country. While manufacturing the Prefab Homes Toyota adapts automobile manufacturing technology. This results in stylish, earthquake-resistant Prefab Homes in Japan.
Toyota Prefab Homes only make 0.5% of Toyota’s sales every year but with dropping car sales due to international recession Cheaper Toyota Prefab Homes might help support Toyota through the thin times. Toyota’s Prefab Homes are built from six or more modules in 45 days. These Prefab Homes have a conservative home model called the Smart Stage that sells for $200k & is about a 1000 sf, two-story home. More expensive, custom-built Prefab Home is 2600 sf that sells for around $800k. Toyota Prefab Homes are strong and guaranteed for about 60 years, which is twice the average lifespan of a home in Japan.
Toyota Prefab Homes were sold in large numbers between 2006 to 2009 some 15000. But what's interesting about Toyota Prefab Homes number is that it shows how effectively Prefab homes can be manufactured using the same techniques that are used in the auto industry. The Toyota Prefab Homes unit is profitable, and Green too as Toyota Prefab Homes compliment the plug-in hybrid Prius by Toyota.

Energy Starved New york

High-flying kites could generate enough wind energy to power New York.

The energy starved world of today is looking for possible ways using which the maximum amount of renewable energy could be generated that could not just power a city block or a small town but the largest cities in the world and probably the entire world as well. Scientists at the Carnegie Institution and California State University have identified New York as one of the prime locations where high-flying kites can be used to convert high-altitude winds into energy.

Unlike winds close to the surface of earth, winds in the upper regions of the atmosphere preferably those which make the jet streams can be harnessed to produce tens of times of output than conventional wind turbines that are used on the surface. Ideally, the turbines, which would be high-altitude flying kites tethered to the surface, would have be placed at a height of around 30,000 feet.

Jet stream winds are generally 10 times faster than winds near the ground and most importantly they’re steady as well. More wind speed means more energy, which made scientists at these universities believe that they can power entire cities by flying these kites, a process which looks simple on paper but might get complicated if actually planned. These scientists predict up to 40MW of electricity can be generated by the current designs and transmitted to the ground via the tether, which is about four times the output of current designs used on the surface.

Green living improving Health today and tommorow

Much attention has been paid in recent years to what seems to be a growing environmental conscience in the United States. Going green used to be considered expensive and a luxury for those who could afford the trend. Now it appears that we are learning that not only is adopting more environmentally conscious attitudes good for our economic situation, but also our….health? Yes, if we dig a bit deeper we can see that dirty industries and backwards policy is actually harming the health of the earth for our children and the health of her inhabitants today.

How Does Environmental Policy Affect Public Health?

There are two levels of Cassociated with dirty industry, both direct and indirect. The direct consequences are examples like increased asthma rates in areas with high smog indices. Chlorofluorocarbon release into the atmosphere has shown to decrease the filter of direct sunlight on the planet, resulting in more concentrated ultraviolet light reaching the surface of the earth. Perhaps it is no surprise then that in countries with depleted atmospheric gas, skin cancer rates are among the highest in the world.

The indirect health consequences are harder to see immediately, but closer examination reveals that these are, in fact, perhaps the most hazardous. Bi-products of dirty and backwards industries, such as coal and oil processing, include cancer causing substances like asbestos and benzene. A U.K. study conducted in 2002 indicated that coal and oil industry workers are at a much higher risk of developing mesothelioma (associated with asbestos exposure) and leukemia (traced to benzene and heavy-metal exposure). Dr. Valerie Rusch among many other doctors who specialize in this area understand that these are substances that can be directly traced to antiquated pre-regulation equipment in industries whose environmental hazards are even more inherent.

Can we really afford to continue on the path we were on before? Investment in clean industry means not a healthier planet for our children and grandchildren, but also a healthier place for us to live today.

Dirty Industries have long tail of Consequences

In recent years there has been a great deal of national attention focused on the improvement of industrial environmental standards. Even as we attempt to rebuild our economy, we seem to be focused on not only restoring industry, but also using this as an opportunity to do it in a way that is not environmentally destructive. This provides us the opportunity to improve all aspects of these industries, including the workplace hazards among workers and the health hazards affecting members of the surrounding communities that were all too common.

What many people may fail to realize is that not only does the health of our planet depend on improved environmental standards, but our health may as well. Health complications of industry can essentially be divided into two categories, both direct and indirect.

Direct health conditions which have arisen as a result of the burning of fossil fuels, for instant, are increased asthmas rates in areas with high smog indices. Even mild cases of asthma can deteriorate overall respiratory capacity over time and leave breathing seriously diminished if the quality of the air people breathe is unimproved. Release of chlorofluorocarbons into the atmosphere has shown to lower our filtered sunlight, increasing ultraviolet light exposure. Ultraviolet light has been conclusively link to skin cancer. Perhaps it is no surprise then that skin cancer incidence in countries like South Africa and Australia, where the atmosphere is most diminished, is much higher than other areas of the earth.

Indirect health consequences include those which can be attributed to antiquated industrial infrastructure, including toxin exposure among workers. Oil refinery workers, for instance, are shown to have a much higher chance of developing mesothelioma, a rare cancer caused by exposure to asbestos, than those in cleaner industries. While asbestos was banned for most uses in the late 1970s several of these refineries and factories are still using pre-ban equipment which is exposing workers to harmful asbestos fibers.

We see then, that there is a clear advantage to implementation of cleaner, more sustainable energy policies and environmental attitudes, not only for the health or our planet and our posterity, but that of world’s population even today.

A green Ride

Niklas Palm, a design student at the Umeå Institute of Design, has shared with us his latest creation, the Audi IceKraft_, which is a wind and solar powered vehicle to make your icy rides green. The vehicle has a computer-controlled sail that is connected to an electrical engine that turns the sail to the optimum position. The power comes from solar cells that are covering the entire body of the vehicle.
The driver is positioned on his stomach facing forward and controls the Icekraft_ with two handles attached to the front blades. When for example the left handle is pulled toward the driver’s body, the vehicle leans to the left and creates a carving effect that makes the vehicle turn left.

The recycled Win Desk

If you were told that a recycled desk would cost you $5000, then you would obviously think we are crazy or kidding. But that’s no ordinary desk. The creative folks from Reestore have once again conjured up recycling innovation with aviation trash to create a desk out of an old airplane wing. Dubbed Deborah, it looks unusual for an office desk, but the appeal of setting your files on an old Boeing 747 wing is an alluring prospect indeed.

Initially crafted for business tycoon Theo Paphitis, Reestore is now going commercial with this expensive, yet exclusive desk. Supported by stainless steel legs and topped with toughened glass, the desk measures in at 2100mm x 1000mm x 900mm.

Recycle and reuse is a concept that is not very popular in the aviation industry and that is one of the reasons why it gets plenty of slack. I guess Reestore is giving them a whole new way of reducing waste and making some profits too!

World's fastest plane

Research indicates that aviation is the fastest growing source of CO2 and with more and more people opting for the fastest way to commute, the figures are bound to reach staggering heights in the next couple of decades. Greening airplanes isn’t an easy and a practically feasible task considering the demand for speedier planes is ever increasing. SkySpark, which took the sky for the first time on June 10, is definitely a stepping stone toward greener aviation.

The 100% electricity-powered airplane made a world record by reaching a top speed of 250km/h. The airplane is a specially built Pioneer Alpi 300, which is now powered by a 75KW brushless electric motor fueled by an array of lithium-polymer batteries. The team behind the development is looking forward for better range and more speed using engine technology that runs on hydrogen fuel cells.

Picture of the day

joke of the day

An environmentalist dies and reports to the pearly gates. St. Peter checks his dossier and says, "Ah, you're an environmentalist -- you're in the wrong place." Thinking that heaven could never make an error, the environmentalist reports to the gates of hell and is let in.

Pretty soon, the environmentalist gets dissatisfied with the environment in hell, and starts implementing eco-friendly improvements. After a while, global warming, air and water pollution are under control. The landscape is covered with grass and plants, the food is organic and the people are happy. The environmentalist has become a pretty popular guy.

One day God calls Satan up on the telephone and says with a sneer, "So, how's it going down there in hell?" Satan replies, "Hey, things are going great. We've clean air and water, the temperature is better and the food tastes better, and there's no telling what this environmentalist is going to fix next."
God replies, "What??? You've got an environmentalist? That's a mistake - he should never have gotten down there; send him up here." Satan says, "No way. I like having an environmentalist on the staff, and I'm keeping him." God says, "Send him back up here or I'll sue." Satan laughs uproariously and answers, "Yeah, right. And just where are YOU going to get a lawyer?

World’s largest solar power

World’s largest solar power plant to be constructed in Sahara.

Taking advantage of the dryness of Sahara Desert, renewable energy giants are prepping up the installation of the world’s largest solar power plant that collectively will generate a whopping 100GW of concentrating solar power. Promoted by Desertec Foundation, the plant will be built by 20 blue chip German companies, who would be gathering together to discuss plans and investments to create the massive project.

The companies involved in the planning state that similar installations have to be constructed to end the gripping energy crisis. The €400bn project would take 10-15 years to go online, but once constructed it will help other countries of the world to aim towards renewable energy generating plants to end their dependence on fossil fuels.

Greening Germany with a sustainable Eco City

World class Eco City to be powered by renewable sources of energy.

Germany’s Hamburg-Hamburg Harbor has announced the development of a world class Eco City development, which will be designed by Tec Architecture and the global engineering group ARUP. The sustainable development will be home to industry and entrainment facilities.

The development will use the latest advancements in green design and will be seeking to achieve the highest level of environmental certification from LEED, BREEAM and DGNB. Comprising 10 ecofriendly buildings, the complex will integrate green materials and passive design techniques to lower the energy consumption by as much as 30%.

The Eco City will use wind turbines to generate about 10% of the complex’s energy demands and use solar energy for hot water and lights. The roofs of the buildings will be covered in greenery to capture water runoff and cool the interiors.
